Welcome to Spanish!
My name is Maura Obercian and I will be teaching your child Spanish this year. I am excited to be here and I am hopeful that your child will have a fun and rewarding experience in Spanish class.
Although this is only my second year here at TES, it is my 14th year teaching Spanish, previously I taught in Brooklyn, NY. I am a longtime appreciator of Spanish language and culture, and have lived in Spain and studied and traveled in Mexico and Central America. I love to inspire students to develop an appreciation for languages and other cultures in the hopes that they might grow up to be citizens of the world!
Students in Kindergarten-Grade 4 have one 40-minute Spanish class per week, and 5th grade has two. My class is conducted primarily in Spanish. Each class has a routine and plenty of interaction which will provide ample opportunities for your child to engage in Spanish. I love to incorporate music, drama and movement in the classroom, and last year went desk-free to allow as much freedom as possible.
Throughout the year the students will work on small projects, stories and activities which they will keep in their folder. The folder will remain in the classroom and travel home on a few occasions throughout the year so you can browse through it and see what your child has been learning. Please remember to ask your child about what they have been up to in Spanish class, and perhaps they can share a song or game! I will also include some links to songs and games on my page on the TES website.
I am looking forward to working with your children this year. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to know more about the curriculum or my expectations. My email address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
